San Diego is preparing for what officials say could become a very strong El Niño heading into fall and winter 2026–27. While El Niño does not guarantee major storms, warmer Pacific Ocean temperatures can increase the potential for heavy rain and flooding. The City of San Diego is already urging residents to prepare by checking their flood risk, clearing drainage areas, creating an emergency plan, and signing up for local alerts.
But there’s another interesting El Niño effect happening off our coastline: more sharks.
Researchers are reporting unusually high numbers of juvenile white sharks along the California coast this year. Warmer water associated with El Niño can push young white sharks north from Baja California into Southern California waters, and experts say some sharks began showing up months earlier than normal in 2026.
San Diego is also famous for its seasonal gatherings of harmless leopard sharks, particularly around La Jolla. Warmer coastal conditions can influence where sharks and the fish they feed on congregate. Despite the increased shark activity, researchers emphasize that shark attacks on people remain extremely rare.
So this could be an interesting year for San Diego: warmer ocean water, more marine life activity, and potentially a wetter winter.
For homeowners, the bigger concern remains flooding. Now is a good time to check your drainage, review your insurance coverage and understand whether your property is located in or near a flood-prone area.
